The Great Dane, also known as the German Mastiff or Deutsche Dodge, is a breed of dog from Germany. The Great Dane descends from hunting dogs known from the Middle Ages and is one of the most giant breeds in the world. The Great Dane is a large German domestic dog known for its giant size.

The Great Dane combines its regal appearance, strength, and elegance with great size and a powerful, well-formed, smoothly muscled body. The Great Dane is a very gentle and loving animal and, with the proper care and training, is excellent around children, significantly when being raised with them. However, if not properly socialized, a Great Dane may become fearful or aggressive towards new stimuli, such as strangers and new environments.

Great Danes, like most giant dogs, have a faster metabolism. This results in more energy and food consumption per dog than in small breeds per pound. They have some common health problems to large species, including bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus).
