In 1897, the Austrian Consul General in Nice Emil Jellinek visited Daimler. During this visit, he buys a Daimler vehicle. Emil Jellinek, who gained great acclaim on the French Riviera with this vehicle, bought another racing car from Daimler in 1899. He gave his eldest daughter Mercedes the name of this race car and participated in a race in Nice and won first place. Following this success, Emil Jellinek ordered 36 more cars from Daimler and stipulated that these cars should bear the Mercedes name. After the success of sales, Daimler named the vehicles it produced after 1901 as Mercedes.
