FERROL OF ILLUSTRATION

The port of Ferrol, due to the special configuration of the estuary and its orography, is one of the safest in the world. At the end of the 16th century, Felipe II decided that the Ferrol estuary would be used as a base for the Royal Navy. In the eighteenth century, Ferrol was designated capital of the Department Marítimo del Norte, Felipe V ordering the creation of the Royal Arsenal and a shipyard in the village of A Graña. Later, Fernando VI ordered the construction of a large shipyard in the town of Ferrol, dedicated almost exclusively to the construction of ships for the Navy.

When you download the application you can choose between two of the great characters of the Ferrol of the Enlightenment: María de Castro, one of the 5 women who in 1784 had a little school at home (at that time only 1% of the female population could read or write) or the Marqués de la Ensenada, statesman and enlightened politician, benefactor of Jorge Juan (the arsenals of Ferrol were built thanks to his efforts).

As you play there will be a narrator who will guide you through the Ferrol of the Enlightenment, telling you anecdotes about this historical route: Jorge Juan, one of the most versatile characters of the XVIII century in Spain: mathematician and astronomer, but above all a sailor. His most dangerous occupation was to spy in England on his techniques of shipbuilding commissioned by the Spanish Crown, in fact, he managed to capture his best craftsmen and shipbuilders and bring them to work in Spain. It has a statue in the Gardens of Herrera de Ferrol.
