How Islam Views Feminism and Violence

This essay debates about the critical space between the two intellectual paradigms that inform the struggle for Muslim women's anticolonial equality in the neocolonial period, namely Islam and feminism. Fatima Seedat distinguishes between scientific trends that hinder Islamic convergence and feminism who think that convergence is important, and finally, with those who are silent or who oppose convergence but “take Islam for granted”, that is, who use feminist methods for reform aspirations.

The latter group may see their work as a natural continuation of Muslim historical awareness of the treatment of women or as compensation for the historical absence of gender equality in Islam. This article argues that Islamic feminism may seem as an inevitable part of the convergence of Islam and feminism, but it is also inadequate for the issue of gender equality in Islam. Not only does it reject Islamic feminism, but experts consider that Islamic feminism, as an analytical construct, also hinders a new understanding of gender differences originating from non-Western and anti-colonial cultural paradigms.

This essay is written based on my previous essay which discussed the convergence of Islam and feminism, and the theorizing of this convergence as “Islamic feminism”, which, in my opinion, is a tentative suggestion that the space between Islam and feminism is neither developing nor configuring. 1 My reason is because of the effort to fighting for gender equality can easily be assimilated to the feminist analytical paradigm. Islamic feminism is inevitable in this convergence.

Even so, Islamic feminism as an analytical construct is also inadequate to be considered in the issue of gender equality in Islam.
