Erica was born to Ralf Fernandes and Lavina Fernandes in a Konkani Mangalorean Catholic family of Karnataka state. Her father was a former model. She has a brother Jermaine Fernandes. She was born and raised in Kurla, Mumbai. She did her schooling from Holy Cross High School, Kurla and completed her pre-degree course from SIES College, Sion. She had enrolled for a BA degree from St Andrew's College, Bandra; however, she discontinued her studies to pursue a career in modelling.

She is best known for playing Dr. Sonakshi Bose in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi. Currently, she is portraying the role of Prerna Sharma in Star Plus's Kasautii Zindagii Kay.
