Hand in hand is a form of non-verbal communication, a gesture whose meaning varies considerably depending on the culture.

Children from different parts of the world hold hands in friendship or play. Some rhyme games, such as "Ring Around the Rosy" and "Red Rover" involve hand holding.

Parents hold the hands of their children, often as a means of protection, authority or control. For example, a parent can hold a child's hand in a public place or across the street to keep the child nearby and protect him from potential dangers.

In North America, hand-holding for adults is generally considered a romantic gesture made by couples who are dating or who are married.

In many other countries, however, adults can hold hands as a sign of friendship or respect. For example, in 2005, Americans were shocked to see photos of the president at the time, George W. Bush, holding the hand of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. This adult hand is traditional in parts of the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean region.

During demonstrations, demonstrators sometimes hold hands in solidarity. This is called a "human chain". During some demonstrations in Asia, several million people have adhered to this practical behavior.
