Background:

Almost every day, someone will ask you "How are you doing?" The common answer to this question is "good" or a number of words like good (e.g. fair, OK, etc.) There is very little or no thought given to this answer, nor does it provide any insight into how you are actually doing. A while ago, I decided to not use the word good with replying to "How are you doing?". There are two reasons I decided to ban good:

1) We just say it as an automatic response. We don't even know we said it.

2) The word good could be seen as average. To me, it is important to be better than average.

I experienced great success in replacing good with a few other positive words. However, my list was short and it was difficult to pick a new word every day. People started to anticipate what word I would use for a given day.

Daily Positive Word is designed to address the two issues with using the word good and at the same time make it easier to do so.

How it works:

Daily Positive Word works by picking a positive word each day which you can use as a response to the question "How are you doing?" You then can then use that word all day. The point is not that you reflect the word, but rather you become the word. For example, when you get the daily word of "Awesome", from that point forward, you become awesome. You do this not by changing anything in your life, but by simply responding to the question "How are you doing?" What you may see happen when you start using your positive word is others will notice! They may simply be happy to hear something other than good, or they may want to know why you are better than good. In the latter case, it is a good idea to think about this in advance as not to be caught off guard. The answer does not need to be complex, a simple "I am alive and enjoying life" would be an acceptable answer. Feel free to add other items if you wish. You may also find a answer other than good is contagious. Others may want to understand how you broke free from good. (Feel free to tell them about this app.)

Using the app:

Yes, the app is very simple to use and is focused on this one thing. As such, you will not find a lot of features in the app. It only does what is needed to support providing you a new positive word every day. It works by randomly selecting a word from a list. Once a word is used, it is marked as such. Once all the words are marked as used, they are all marked as unused and the cycle begins again. This process ensures that every word is used before any one word is used again. This results in a new word every day. (OK, it is possible on the day when all words are marked unused to randomly pick the word from the previous day. This should be a very rare event.) The app ships with 29 predefined words. You can add your own words, delete words, or deactivate them.

If you would like to add or remove words from the rotation, this is done from the "Edit Words" menu item. Select the word you would like to modify or select the plus button to add a new word. If you deactivate the current day's word, a new word is automatically selected. If you deactivate or delete a word, it is no longer use in the selection of words. The difference between delete and deactivate is a deactivated word can be reactivated. A deleted word would need to be reentered if you want to start using it.

Other uses of the app:

I wrote the app to respond to the question "How are you doing?" but feel free to use the app however you see fit. You could us it just to have a positive word you use in general conversation. You could also us it to come up with a positive word to add to your blog or other writing. If you find another use for the app, I would love to hear about it.
