Curling is played between two teams of four on a rectangular ice surface. Curling is a form of ice sport played on a sheet of ice, sliding stones into the goal area, divided into four concentric circles. Curling has similarities with bocce ball and shuffleboard (deck) and involves sliding granite stones, also called rocks, towards a target area on the opposite end of a long, thin rink of ice that makes up the court.

Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called rocks, down the sheet of ice toward the home plate, the circular target marked on the ice. An end is completed when all eight rocks have been delivered to each team, a total of sixteen gems. A team may score as many as eight points from the 16 rocks produced during the end, or innings, except if there are no stones on the home plate (no rocks on the home plate) or if the nearest opponent has stones evenly spaced, in which case no points are scored. If Team A has a stone in the button and one stone several feet away from the controller, while Team B has one stone at the outside edge of the house, Team A is awarded two points. The goal in Curling is to score points by getting stones closer to the middle of the house, or the button, than the other team's stones.

Each team attempts to get more of their stones closer to the center of the goal than the other teams. The goal in Curling is to get the rocks on your team closer to the target--a one-foot (30 cm)-diameter circle called a toe, or button--than the opposing team. Similar to shuffleboard, the goal in the unique sport of Curling is to get your stones on a rectangular surface toward their correct targets. A signature part of Curling is using a sledgehammer, or paddle, to scrape ice before sliding stones.
