About Crochet Bath Set Decorations

I have learned that crochet cotton is also called crochet thread depending on who you speak to. These words both refer to the same thing in the end.

I'm sure that you have heard of mercerized cotton. Mercerized is when the crochet cotton is held taunt and dipped in a sodium hydroxide bath followed by an acid bath to neutralize it. If you pay attention to the weight listed on the label this number signifies the thickness of the strand. Cotton that is intended for home crocheting that is labeled with the #10 size is bigger than the cotton that has the size of #100. It should be noted that the thread becomes finer as the numbers grow larger when you are referring to crochet cotton.

Pay attention sometime and you will notice that the same rule applies to sewing thread. Pay attention to those numbers and see the difference for yourself!

As I understand it, the different weights of crochet cotton refer to the thickness based on the number of plies in the cotton strand itself. A ply is made when two or more threads are twisted together to form a single strand. Different weights of cotton are produced when different plies are created. The weights of the cotton are listed on the label signifying the thickness of the strand or ply.

You might try this experiment to prove what the author says: Take a piece of crochet thread and set it on a table, count the number of strands in a given piece of that same piece of thread and the same number of strands that you counted should be the size of the crochet thread. For example, if you have a #10 crochet thread, you should have 10 strands of crochet cotton in that strand that you counted.

Now, there is a theory that crochet cotton doesn't usually block well. I have news for you - that is a big misconception in this world today. If you are having this type of problem, try another method of blocking, and if you use the right method of blocking, you will never experience any problem.

Now, I agree that crochet cotton seems to be thinner when you run it through your fingers, but with the bulk of the work, is it really thinner? If there is no bulk to that work, yes, it will seem to wrinkle easier than other materials, but it will block just as easily or maybe even easier!
