Instructions
1. For tall lamp (shown right), use marker to trace following
shapes onto foam sheet: two 12" x 5" rectangles; two 12" x 3"
rectangles; one 5-1/4" square. For square lamp, trace: two
8-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles; two 6-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles; one 8-3/4" square.
2. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Cut shapes
from foam sheet. Trace each foam shape twice onto tissue paper; cut out.
3. Spread thin layer of white craft glue over back of each
foam shape. Adhere first tissue paper layer to foam, applying
firm pressure. Dilute small amount of glue with water; adhere
second layer of tissue to first. Let dry.
4. Refer to Diagram A to glue sides of tall lamp together,
sandwiching shorter sides between longer edges. Assemble
square lamp in same way, referring to Diagram B.
5. To reinforce top and bottom joints, apply glue to
toothpick and insert at angle through both pieces of foam as
indicated in diagrams. Use wire cutters to trim exposed
toothpick ends. Note: Be sure picks will not be visible in
areas to be etched. Center and glue foam squares to top and
front of lamps; let dry. Use scrap foam to sand lamps smooth.
6. On tall lamp, center and adhere 10" strip of masking tape
to each 3"-wide side. Tape off 2-1/2" square at top of lamp.
On square lamp, measure and mark 1"-wide border around two
opposite sides and top of lamp. Tape off center areas.
7. Use palette knife to apply grout to top and sides of lamp,
avoiding masked areas.
8. While grout is still slightly damp, use pigment ink to
stamp leaf images onto lamps as shown. Note: Pigment ink will
prevent stamp from sticking to grout. Clean stamps well.
9. While still damp, use craft knife with new blade to cut
1/2"-deep outline around each leaf image. Note: Solvent action
of acetone will stop when it reaches cut outline. Remove damp
grout from inside outlines; let dry completely.
10. Remove masking tape; cut outlines around previously taped areas.
11. Working in well-ventilated area, etch designs into foam.
To begin, use old brush to apply small amount of acetone to
each leaf and rectangle. Let acetone work naturally; do not
try to speed up process by adding too much. When dissolving
action has stopped, repeat as needed to reach 1/2" depth.
Remove loose bits of foam from dissolved areas.
12. Dilute paints with water to create transparent washes.
Apply colors to leaves and rectangles as desired; let dry.
Note: Grouted areas of lamps may be left natural or painted, as well.
13. To illuminate lamp, place candle lamp inside tall lamp or
wall-mounted touch light inside square lamp.
