******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY MUSIC ********************

Contemporary Country was Time Life’s comprehensive 22-volume series issued (on a compact disc or cassette) during the early part of the 1990s, bringing unprecedented attention to country music during the 1970s up until the early part of the 1990s. The complete Contemporary Country series contains 482 tracks in total.

Each edition in the Contemporary Country series recorded a particular time period starting from the 1970s until the early-1990s). Except for the 1990 series, each decade had three “Pure Gold” editions. Each volume holds 22 tracks and portrayed the specific time period's most prominent and exceptional music tracks. Each series came with a booklet, containing notes made by some of the most rusted historians of a specific genre, photos of the musicians, as well as detailed information about the songs (performers, writers, and highest position on Billboard magazine's country charts).

The Contemporary Country series began its first issue in the summer of 1991 and subsequent volumes have been issued until 1993 when the final edition covered the early 1990s-era of country music. Despite the discontinuation of the series, Time Life maintained selling the "Contemporary Country" until the early part of the 2000s. This series has been displaced by four new series: "Classic Country" (a series which recorded the music from the 1940s until mid-1980s); "Country Gold" (this series covered the music period from the 1980s until the mid-1990s); "Superstars of Country" (covered the music era of the mid-1960s until mid-1980s); "Lifetime of Country Romance" (covered the same time period as "Superstars of Country" but concentrated on love-themed songs and ballads).
