The Ivorian Constitution of 2016 is the fundamental law

Côte d'Ivoire has had a decade of politico-military crisis, marked by partition between the North, in the hands of the rebellion, and the South, controlled by the camp of Laurent Gbagbo. The period of instability culminated in the post-election crisis of 2010-2011, prompted by President Laurent Gbagbo's refusal to recognize his defeat and the victory of his rival Alassane Ouattara in the November 2010 presidential election.

During the 2015 presidential election, President Alassane Ouattara promised a new constitution to replace that of 2000, held responsible for the crises in Côte d'Ivoire, particularly because of the concept of ivoirité. An expert committee was set up by the president in July 2016 to draft a constitution.

The final draft, adopted by the government and the National Assembly in October 2016 and published in the official journal, was submitted to the Ivorian people by referendum. The result was the adoption of the new text, promulgated by Law No. 2016-886 of November 8, 2016 on the Constitution of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire
