Every cloud is also a harbinger of the wind that created it. Rising air creates clouds. The resulting cloud shapes follow the path of air ups and downs. The shape of no cloud is the same as another. Lens clouds sometimes form on top of each other like a 'pancake' and can be compared to flying 'spaceships' when viewed from a distance. When lens clouds form, it's no surprise to those who think they've seen too many UFOs. They usually do not move; air flows through them.

Cloud waves can also form far from mountains. Just like the waves that the wind creates on the water, the clouds also spread in waves. When included in a moist layer, lens clouds can form on the crests of the waves and gaps between the waves. Pilots do not like these waves very much, as it will be a problematic and shaky flight. Sometimes mountain waves also occur in dry areas of the atmosphere that do not form clouds, causing aircraft (not air gap!) to be caught in open-air turbulence (CAT).
