Calligraphy is one type of art work that emphasizes the beauty that is contained in the forms of letters that have been modified so as to have a high aesthetic value.

Calligraphy is widely used as wall decoration both in the mosque and at home because of its beauty. Although in its development appeared hundreds of styles of calligraphy writing, not all of these styles survive until today. There are eight popular calligraphy styles known to artists of calligraphy.

1. Kufi

Calligraphy style is widely used for copying the early Qur'an period. Therefore, this Kufi style is the oldest of all the styles of calligraphy. Calligraphy style has a character that is very rigid, broken, and very formal.

2. Tsuluts

Calligraphic works that use the style of Tsuluts can be written in the form of curves, with the head tapered and sometimes written with a strong connection and intersection. Because of its beauty and flexibility, the style of Tsuluts is widely used as a mosque architecture ornament, book cover, and interior decoration.

3. Naskhi

Naskhi style calligraphy is most commonly used by Muslims, both for writing religious scripts and daily writing. This is very popular calligraphy used to write the Qur'an manuscripts until now. The character of the letter is simple, almost without additional decoration, so it is easy to write and read

4. Riq'ah

Calligraphy style Riq'ah is the result of the development of calligraphy style Naskhi and Tsuluts. As is the case with Naskhi style writing used in everyday writing. Riq'ah is also commonly used for regular handwriting or for other practical purposes. The character of the letter is very simple, without a vowel, making it possible to write quickly.

5. Diploma (Raihani)

Calligraphy style style diploma (Raihani) is a blend of style Tsuluts and Naskhi. This style is commonly used for writing a diploma from a calligraphy teacher to his students. The character of the letters is like the Tsuluts, but more simply, a few extra ornaments, and is not commonly written in stacks (murakkab).

6. Diwani

This style is used to write the head of the official letter of the kingdom. The character of this style is round and not in character. The beauty of his writings depends on his line of play which sometimes on certain letters rises or falls, far exceeding the horizontal line. Diwani calligraphy model is widely used for architectural ornaments and book covers.

7. Diwani Jali

Diwani Jali style calligraphy is a Diwani style development. The anatomy of the Diwani Jali letter is basically similar to Diwani, but much more ornamental, solid, and sometimes piled up. Unlike the unhappy Diwani, Diwani Jali is otherwise very abundant. This abundant herbat is intended for decorative purposes and does not entirely serve as a punctuation. Therefore, this style is difficult to read at a glance. Typically, this model is used for applications that are not functional, such as interior decoration of mosques or decorative objects.

8. Pharisees

As the name suggests, the Pharisaic style calligraphy was developed by the Persians and became the official letter of this nation since the Safavid period until now. Pharisaic calligraphy is of prime importance to line elements, written without a vowel, and the author's skill is determined by his agility of flicking the letters in exact 'dosage'. This style is widely used as the exterior decoration of mosques in Iran, which is usually combined with colorful arabes.
