Social studies learning is aimed at providing complete insight for SMP/MTs students about various social phenomena, through understanding the connectivity of space and time along with the activities and social interactions therein. This Social Sciences book, especially for Class VIII SMP/MTs, was prepared based on the thinking above, by placing the field of geographic science as the basis (platform) for discussion of various aspects of the fields of history, economics and sociology. Through IPS, students are introduced to the full diversity of regional potential.

Gradually, the emphasis on social studies study areas in junior high schools from grades VII, VIII and IX continues to expand. Class VII emphasizes spatial interactions within the Indonesian scope, class VIII the ASEAN scope, and Class IX the global scope. The study continues to make Indonesia the center of view so that the introduction of foreign countries does not emphasize the study of foreign countries, but emphasizes Indonesia's relations with world countries and their influence on national development. Thus, it is hoped that students will have an awareness of excellence, local and national, and have a global perspective.

The diversity of conditions that Indonesia has is a potential resource that can be used to meet the needs of its population in the dimensions of space and time as well as multidimensional connectivity ties, so that each symptomatic condition and its advantages can function as a development resource. In relation to this diversity, the resources we have include location resources, human resources, natural resources and cultural resources. With their existing diversity and advantages, these four resources are expected to produce a strong unity in supporting the success of national development.

The discussion of this book is divided into four chapters, namely:

Chapter-I Spatial interactions in life in ASEAN countries.

Chapter-II The influence of social interaction on social and national life.

Chapter-III Advantages and limitations of space and its influence on economic, social and cultural activities in Indonesia and ASEAN.

Chapter-IV Changes in Indonesian society during the colonial period and the growth of national spirit.

It is hoped that understanding the concepts contained in each chapter can strengthen students' sense of self-confidence, love and pride for the superiority of their country's region, as well as awareness as part of world citizens so that awareness grows to manage, utilize and preserve these capitals responsibly. for the prosperity and progress of the nation and state. With the concept of integrated learning, social studies is expected to be a vehicle for improving student competence, including attitudes, knowledge and social skills as a whole.

This book is very open for input and will continue to be improved and perfected.
