A powerful prayer to break the generation

Most merciful Heavenly Father, you are almighty and reign over all the earth. There is no evil or curse in this world that could hinder or defeat your mighty power. Evil may try to test me in the most tempting way, but you, O Father, never leave aside, especially in times of despair. Generational curses are behaviors we adopt because of the environment in which we are raised. Addictions and abuse can influence our behavior, but ultimately we all have a choice to shake off those shackles and embrace freedom in Christ. “The sins of the fathers are punished in the children by becoming the children's own sin,” explains John Piper, “hatred of God is the embodiment of what the father's problem was.” The consequences of repeated sins are definitely generational. God proclaimed to Moses in the verses above that He would not let the guilty go unpunished. Why would he want his children to continue in deplorable habits that would bring them no real happiness or satisfaction? God loves the world so much, He sent His only begotten Son to save us.

Even today, in many cultures, witches or shamans place curses on people with demonic powers. In some cultures, for example, “voodoo” is practiced. This includes practices such as sticking pins into a doll in the likeness of a person, usually with some of that person's hair, nail clippings, etc. incorporated into the doll. Hateful words are projected as the doll is repeatedly stabbed. There are also more gruesome practices used. However, with all evil sorcery rituals, it is the hatred and evil projected from those people who are aimed at the targeted person that causes the harm. The curses pronounced on this doll do not come true because of the doll or the pins. There is no power in these inanimate objects. They occur because of demonic power operating through the person who utters the curses.

In many cultures, other than Western societies, people have no problem understanding these curses and blessings because the presence of demonic beings is very real to them. In fact, in many places they leave offerings to appease evil spirits, with the intention of warding them off so they can leave them alone.

If we think someone is casting a curse on us, we must not reflect a curse back on whoever sent it to us. We are not to return evil for evil, but rather overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). Ask God to forgive them, because often they don't know what they are doing. If you intercede for such people, you are obeying the Word, which enables the Holy Spirit to automatically lift the curse if we speak good and pray for those who would seek to harm us. We should also cite scriptures that promise us protection like Psalm 91.

Remember the devil is the one who fell and we have power over him so we don't have to fear him. As we use our authority over him in faith, he cannot harm us. We have power over all curses through our Lord, Jesus Christ. When we assure people that everyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord receives eternal life, the fact that God has already approved the assurance is a powerful motivating factor.
