Bridge of Sighs Wallpapers

Forget about the low-quality Bridge of Sighs wallpaper apps.

The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge in Venice, Italy. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, passes over the Rio di Palazzo, and connects the New Prison (Prigioni Nuove) to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antonio Contino, whose uncle Antonio da Ponte designed the Rialto Bridge, and it was built in 1600.

The 1861 opera Le Pont des Soupirs by Jacques Offenbach has the bridge as a setting.

The Bridge of Sighs features heavily in the 1979 Diane Lane film, A Little Romance. One of the characters tells of a tradition that if a couple kisses in a gondola beneath the Bridge of Sighs in Venice at sunset while the church bells toll, they will be in love forever.

Marillion, an English progressive rock band, mentions this particular bridge in their song 'Jigsaw'. ('We are renaissance children becalmed beneath the Bridge of Sighs').

Tourists can view the Bridge of Sighs from the outside without an entrance fee. If you want to cross the bridge on foot and look inside, you must visit the Doge's Palace.

However, you might want to know something: the sighs the bridge refers to are not of love but resignation and despair! In fact, for some, the Bridge of Sighs was the last bridge they would ever cross.

If you visit the Doge's Palace, you will cross the Bridge of Sighs twice. After admiring the splendor of the Doge's Palace, the path leads to the Prigioni Nuove prison via the left passage inside the Ponte Dei Sospiri. Then you can see several dozen rooms of the former prison. Next, on the other side, you return to the Doge's Palace via the Bridge of Sighs. This time one has the famous view of the Ponte Della Paglia and the sea. But the bars are so thick that one hardly sees anything. Photographing through one of the two windows (see picture above) is hardly possible. Also, the prisoners probably didn't see much more during their famous last view from the small bridge.
