The BMW Z4 is a sports car model produced by BMW since 2002. The Z4 replaces BMW's previous roadster models, the Z1, 507, Z8, and Z3. The first generation BMW Z4 was produced at the Greer factory in the USA. The second generation was introduced at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and is made at the Regensburg plant in Germany.

The vehicle with the Roadster body type of the BMW Z4 was named E85, and the car with the coupe form was named E86.

The BMW Z4 Roadster was initiated in 2002 with the 2.5i and 3.0i six-cylinder models. Five-speed manual, six-speed manual, five-speed automatic, and six-speed SMG-II automatic were offered as transmission options.

The first four-cylinder model in the series, the BMW Z4, 2.0i Roadster, was launched for the European market in 2005.

The coupe's model range was more limited than the roadster. It consisted only of the six-cylinder 3.0si, and the BMW Z4 M. Transmission options were 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic with steering column-mounted shift paddles.

The BMW Z4 with the code E89, produced between 2009 and 2016, is the second car in the series. It is the first Z series model to use a retractable metal roof. For this reason, coupe or roadster vehicle versions are no longer available. The BMW Z4 M, a performance series, was never produced with this body code.

In 2018, the E89 was introduced as the successor to the BMW Z4. BMW has returned to soft-top sports cars with the G29, the third and most up-to-date model in the Z4 series. Launched in March 2019, the vehicle was designed by Australian-born Calvin Luk. It is based on the BMW Z4 Concept, introduced a year ago, and bears significant similarities to the Toyota Supra due to BMW's partnership with Toyota.
