It began in ancient Rome, when cakes were made with round shapes from flour, beans, yeast and sweeteners from honey. This cake is served during special moments, such as birthdays for example. In the early days of Europe, the words cake and bread were visually exchangeable, the only difference being sweeter cakes while bread was not.

In the 17th century, the shape of the cake was more or less the same as the existing form complete with parts such as layers or decorations. But at that time a birthday cake was only available to rich people. Birthday cakes are finally becoming popular because of the industrial revolution, when materials and equipment are increasingly available.
