History of BAPE - A Bathing Ape or commonly known BAPE is a Japanese clothing brand that was created in 1993 by a DJ and a Designer named Tamoaki Nagao a.k.a Nigo.

The brand was first launched in Harajuku, Shibuya, the Bape brand specializing its product collection on male, female, and child streetwear styles only.

Bape itself has several stores, such as Bape Stores, Bape Pirate Stores, Bape Kids Stores, Bapexclusive Aoyama, and Bapexclusive Kyoto. Not only in Japan, Bape currently has several stores in various countries such as Hongkong, New York, Taipei, Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and Singapore.

History of Bape

Nigo or Tamoaki Nagao is the founder of BAPE, Nigo is also a designer, producer, and DJ. After he completed his studies in the field of fashion editing in college, he also worked as an editor and stylist for Popeye magazine.

Until one day he ventured to borrow some 4 million yen from a kenalnnya and also allow Nigo to use his shop. His first store "Nowhere" was co-produced with his friend Jun Takahashi from the Undercover label precisely on April 1, 1993.

Then, he decided to make his own clothing brand. This brand name is inspired from a movie Planet of the Apes. According to Nigo the name BAPE is taken based on the Japanese term meaning A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water this describes the method of soaking with warm water for long periods of time, Nigo uses this term to mock the lazy nature of some Japanese.

Nigo has its own way in terms of introducing this brandnya. For almost two years, he only produces 30 to 50 shirts per week. To introduce the brandnnya half of the production is given to his friends and relatives, the rest to be sold again.
