The process of forming the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was promoted in the 80s of the twentieth century, when the country's socio-economic conditions were still extremely difficult in the post-war period. On October 24, 1995, the Prime Minister issued a Decision to establish the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. On November 12, 1997, on the occasion of the Summit of French-speaking countries held in Hanoi, the Museum held an inauguration ceremony, with the presence of Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh and the President of the French Republic. Jacques Chirac.

The museum is located on a campus of nearly 4.5 hectares, including three exhibition areas:

First, the 2-story building called Bronze Drum, displaying the ethnic groups in Vietnam, began opening to the public on November 13, 1997.

Second, the outdoor display area, called the Architecture Garden, is about 2 hectares wide, built from 1998 to 2006, mainly introducing 10 folk architectural works of 10 ethnic groups in Vietnam.

Third, the 4-storey building called Canh Kite, started construction in June 2007 and opened the first exhibition at the end of 2013, is an exhibition area for residents outside Vietnam, first of all the Vietnamese people. ethnic group in Southeast Asia.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology application allows users to:
