All that being said, as an Apostolic woman, I absolutely value modesty as it pertains to dress! I believe that early on in the Bible, in Genesis 3, God showed He cares about how people dress. After they sinned, Adam and Eve made aprons to cover their nakedness. The aprons weren’t good enough for God, and He made robes of animal skins for them instead. In Zephaniah, God says He will judge idolaters, including those who wear strange or “foreign” clothes (1:8). In several other instances of Scripture, the Bible uses illustrations about clothes—or the lack of them—to show how far from or close to Him people are. The New Testament talks more specifically about the kind of apparel a Christian should wear. The Apostle Paul said that “women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works”

For me, modesty is more than just a way to dress or a fashion statement. Modesty is an attitude that should be reflected in the way I present myself to the rest of the world. Someone with a modest attitude doesn’t try to be the loudest in the room; she doesn’t look for ways to promote herself. Modesty is the opposite of pride. Living modestly is a way I can show respect to others: it’s a way I show I value others above myself.
