More than half of the book has been drawn from the wealth of material inspired by her articles that appeared during her long life, in magazines such as Review and Herald, Youth's Instructor and Signs of the Times.

About a third of it has been drawn from unpublished letters and manuscripts, which are in the custody of the trustees of the writings of Ellen G. White, under whose direction this book has been prepared.

Much of this unpublished material comes from personal messages, sent heart to heart to certain people: messages that reach us today with the same fervent exhortation, the same tender admonition and encouragement as when they were written. There are several pages of special interest that contain excerpts from Sr.'s diary. White, and give the reader interesting insights into his personal prayer life.

In order to place each reading within the limits of a page, it has been necessary to resort to deletions that have been duly indicated. Great care has been taken to preserve the author's thought and purpose without distortion. It should be noted that when there are lines from a hymn or a poem, they were quoted by Sister herself. White.
