Brief Historical Reference:
The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries, founded in 1051 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. The founder of the monastery was the monk Anthony, a native of Lyubech. Co-founder of the monastery was one of the first disciples of Antony - Theodosius. Prince Svyatoslav II Yaroslavich gave the monastery a plateau above the caves, where the construction of churches decorated with paintings began.
In the XII century the monastery received the status of the Lavra - the main large monastery. The names of the chronicler Nestor, the author of The Tale of Bygone Years, the artist Alipia, the enlightener Peter Mogila, the historian of Inokenty Gisel and many others are connected with Lavrov. In the monastery is the rest of the incorrupt relics of God's saints in the Near and Far caves. It houses the relics of St. Ilya of Murom, who is identified with the epic hero. Also in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra there is the grave of Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin. The territory of the monastery is on the right, high side of the river Dnieper, southeastern tip of Kiev, and occupies two hills, separated by a deep hollow.
