Ekushey February is a glorious day for the people of Bangladesh. It is also known as Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day. It has been marked as a day of painful and glorious memories of the language movement of the Bengali people. On this day in 1952 (8 Falgun, 1358), some young people were martyred in a police firing on students protesting for making Bengali one of the state languages and mother tongue of Pakistan. That is why this day has been marked as Martyr's Day.
In accordance with the decision taken by the United Nations in 2006, the International Mother Language Day is observed on the 21st of February every year.
