Little Women follows the lives of four sisters, Meg Jo Beth Amy and Marsh, and is based on the author's childhood experiences with her three sisters. The first part of the book met with critical and commercial success, prompting Alcott to write the second part, which also met with great success. Both parts were first published in a single volume in 1880. Alcott's Little Women was followed by two of the March sisters, Little Men (1871) and Joe's Sons (1886). Little Women has been made into a musical, opera, film, and animated film.
