Buddhism is a religious and philosophical doctrine (dharma) about spiritual awakening (Bodhi) that arose around the 6th century BC. e. in southern Asia. The founder of the teaching was Siddhartha Gautama. The basis of Buddhism is the teaching of the Four Noble Truths: about suffering, about the origin and causes of suffering, about the true cessation of suffering and the removal of its sources, about the true ways to stop suffering. The median, or Eightfold Path of attaining Nirvana is suggested. This path is directly related to the three varieties of cultivation of virtues: morality, concentration and wisdom - prajna. The spiritual practice of passing through these paths leads to a true cessation of suffering and finds its highest point in nirvana.

Traditionally, Buddhism is divided into the Mahayana and Theravada, the so-called Great Chariot and the Teaching of the Old. A distinctive feature of Mahayana is the doctrine of Bodhicitta - the desire to save all living beings without exception, implying boundless compassion and love for them; and the resulting concept of the Bodhisattva - a being that is ready to give up the individual attainment of Nirvana for the purpose of saving all living beings.

The Mahayana includes Tibetan Buddhism, Chinese Buddhism and several separate Buddhist schools. The followers of Mahayana subdivide Buddhism into the Great Vehicle (actually Mahayana) and the Lesser Chariot ("Hinayana"), which is also called the Chariot of the Shravak and Pratyekabudd. The very name "Hinayana" was introduced methodologically for the Buddhists, limited only by the desire for individual enlightenment, and was used in historical controversy with other, now non-existent, early Buddhist schools and with the purpose of explaining the concept of Bodhicitta.
