For a long time, scientists argued about how the border was drawn. For the first time, the ancient Greeks marked the border between Europe and Asia. They saw her off but Poitu (Black Sea). Later, the Romans "shifted" the border to Tanais (Don River) and Meognda (Sea of ​​Azov). In the Middle Ages, Arab scientists "pushed" it even further to the east, to the Itil (Volga) and Kama rivers. And Western European scientists and travelers took the Ob and even the Yenisei for the eastern border of Europe.

The Russian people in the second half of the 16th century marked the boundary along the Stone (as they then called the Urals). Novgorod ushkuiniki crossed the Stone in the XIV century, and possibly even earlier. With the annexation of Siberia to Russia (after the campaigns of Yermak), the Russian state began to be divided into two parts: Russia, or Muscovy (west of the Ural Mountains), and Siberia (the Urals and all the lands known at that time to the east of it). Thus, in Russia there was a border between Muscovy and Siberia (ie, Europe and Asia in our view) along the western slope of the Ural Mountains.
