This type of reference was adopted, because it is extremely difficult to determine the exact day of ovulation, and, accordingly, the date of conception. If we follow the calculation of the gestational age, following the "obstetric" method, then there is simply no fetus in the first week, which means it is impossible to determine the pregnancy in the first week.

Ideally, a woman's ovulation should occur on the 12-14 day of the cycle: a mature egg leaves the follicle, preparing for fertilization. But in reality, everything may turn out to be somewhat different. Ovulation can occur on both 7–8 and 20–21 days of the cycle, depending on the individual characteristics of the woman’s body and the duration of the cycle. Thus, the first week of the “interesting situation” is the most mysterious and even phantom of all forty weeks, because its calculation is performed theoretically by obstetrician-gynecologists.
