About Φιλοκαλία

The Philokalia is a collection of Orthodox Fathers' texts

Philokalia is a collection of written Fathers of the Eastern Orthodox Church, a hesychastic tradition, written from the fourth to the fifteenth century about Christian prayer and life dedicated to God. The work was edited by Agios Nikodimos the Athlete and Makarios Notaras.

In the introduction of the translation of the Palmer, Sherrard, and Ware English translation, worship is defined as "love of beauty, exalted, wonderful, perceived as a transcendent source of life and revelation of truth." The writers of the texts were mainly monks, whose struggle for mental purification and spiritual perfection is repeated as a theme in the Philokalia.

Although the works were well known before their original version in Greek in 1782, they were re-published in many languages since then, including the 7th edition in Dobrotolyubie, Theophanis the Hermit in the 19th century. Besides the Bible, and some texts of the first Christian fathers, Philokalia is a work of great influence and a wonderful example of the devotion of the Eastern Orthodox church.
