Tożsamość Europy Środkowej opiera się na sprzecznościach, które często skutkowały kreatywnym napięciem. Materialne i niematerialne owoce tego napięcia są dziś naszym wspólnym dziedzictwem – wytworem wielowiekowych nawarstwień, przenikania się kultur, idei i wartości. Dziedzictwem jest także nasza pamięć i tożsamość.

Stąd wynika rosnące znaczenie dziedzictwa kulturowego – bo dziedzictwo to wykorzystanie przeszłości do współczesnych celów.

No less a part of this heritage is our own memory and identity – for heritage is nothing other than the use of the past to serve contemporary purposes.
