Launched at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2003, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was the first model to come out of Rolls-Royce Limited. To mark the 100th anniversary of the company, the company has introduced a new, 21st-century Rolls-Royce Phantom, which, just like its grand Classic-era predecessor, features a V12 engine that powers that Phantom. This storied brand has roots in Henry Royce's electrical and mechanical businesses, beginning in 1884, which evolved into the company that makes cars in 1906. Building upon the reputation that Royce had established with his kerosene, Rolls-Royce soon developed a reputation for superb engineering, producing the best cars in the world. Henry Royces company produced its first automobile in 1904, soon being introduced to Charles Rolls, the owner of the automobile dealer. Henry Royce made his first car, the Royce 10, with a two-cylinder engine, at his Manchester plant in 1904. The engines in Rolls-Royces Silver Dawn were straight sixes, displacing 4257cc, and fitted with overhead intakes and side-mounted exhaust valves, the arrangement adopted by the company on its first two-cylinder cars in 1904. His first-ever vehicle debuted in 1904, featuring a two-cylinder engine with 1.8 L, three-bearing cranks, and twin camshafts controlling the side and overhead valves. By late 1904, the newly-designed, four-cylinder, 20-hp Rolls-Royce cars had won some significant races and had become among the most popular luxurious automobiles available. For the company, its range of post-war vehicles had to be considerably more profitable to manufacture and cheaper to purchase and operate than the ones built in the first half of the 20th century.

Noted throughout most of the 20th century as the manufacturer of luxury cars, Rolls-Royce PLC was separated from its automobile manufacturing operations and nationalized after bankruptcy in 1971. The assets were bought by a new publicly-owned company called Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited, which continued the primary operations but sold the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) stake almost immediately and transferred ownership of the profitable, but by then financially non-significant, automobiles division to Rolls-Royce Motors Holdings Limited, which sold it to Vickers in 1980. In an imaginative deal struck the following year, Volkswagen AG acquired its Jet Engine operations from Vickers PLC, and BMW acquired all rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name as far as cars. Although shareholders of Vickers PLC favored a Volkswagen AG purchase, its automobile subsidiary, Rolls-Royce, held rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name and logo (under a deal signed before Vickers took over Rolls-Royce Ltd) and supported a sale to BMW.
