About Math Scholar Pro

Math Scholar Pro - a math helper, tutor and coach for students of all ages.

The learning objective of Math Scholar Pro is to build mental math skill through the use of a simple, entertaining interface. It was designed for students enrolled in elementary, middle and junior high school.

- Subtraction problems are arranged so that the two arguments yield only positive integer results (i.e. no negative numbers).

- Division problems are arranged so that the two arguments yield only whole number quotients (i.e., no mixed number/remainders).

Math Scholar Pro has two operating modes: Practice and Quiz.

PRACTICE MODE

1) Elementary School Math (two term mental math).

[factor1] [operator] [factor2] = [?]

2) Middle School Math (three term mental math)

[factor1] [?] [factorg2] [?] [factor3] = [solution]

- The objective is to select the two operators [?] that will produce an answer that matches the [solution].

3) Junior High School Math - Order of Operations ("PEMDAS")

- PEMDAS is an acronym taught in middle/junior high school classrooms across the nation. It helps students remember the priority, or Order of Operations, used to solve expressions involving strings of numbers and operators. It stands for:

(P)arenthesis

(E)xponent (power)

(M)ultiplication

(D)ivision

(A)ddition

(S)ubtraction

- Algebraic expressions are entered using either of two methods: Freehand (using an internal keyboard) or Program generated.

- A SHOW ME feature provides a step by step analysis of the solution utilizing the SHUNT YARD algorithm. Computer science students will find this feature particularly interesting.

4) Flash Cards.

- The front side of the flash cards show the questions and the back side of the cards shows the answers. Simply tap the question card and the card flips over to check the answer.

- If answered correctly, press the Green Check Mark and the next card appears.

- If answered incorrectly, press the Red X. This saves the card into memory for later review. A new card is presented.

- To review saved cards, use the [MR] Memory Recall button. The [MC] button clears all cards in memory.

5) Tables.

- Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction and Division tables are available.

- Each table row features a [?] button. When pressed, the correct answer for that row is shown. No more using a sheet of paper to hide the answers when studying Times Tables! Ideal for Mental Math practice.

QUIZ MODE

- TIMERS. All quiz modes have the following timer options: Show, Hide or Off. Hide mode is useful if the timer display proves to be distracting. If hidden, the timer will continue to run, but in the background. If the timer is turned OFF, record keeping is disabled. Timer mode changes are automatically saved.

- BEST TIMES. All quiz modes feature recording of completion time performance. A CLEAR option is available to erase stored data and start with a fresh record.

- SCORING [Timer ON] At the completion of the last question on the quiz, the timer is stopped and the quiz is scored. If the quiz is scored 100% (no questions missed), the program compares this score against the saved Best Time for the math operation just concluded. If the score is lower (i.e., completed faster) than the current record, the student is notified, his/her name is requested and the new time replaces the previous Best Time.

- A GRADE SCREEN contains a line by line listing which includes the problem set, the student's answers and a symbol indicating a right (✔) or wrong (✘) answer. If answered incorrectly, the correct answer is also displayed in [brackets].

- A SUMMARY is presented in the bottom of the Grade Screen:

Correct: n out of Number of Questions

Grade (percentage)

Time: 00.00 seconds (if timer ON)

CONCLUSION

Kid-friendly interface. Ten minutes a day will help improve any student's basic math skills, especially the mental math skill.
