About Biblical Use of The Shofar

Praying with the Sound of the Shofar

A shofar is made using a ram’s horn. The Jewish tribe mostly uses it. In recent times, we have seen an increasing usage and reference to the shofar, and it has mostly been used in spiritual gatherings.

Cultural practices have also embraced the blowing of a shofar to announce the presence of a king. Whenever a shofar is blown, something is about to happen. However, the different sounds of a shofar will guide us into the specifics of this powerful instrument.

Spiritually, shofars are weapons, and their sounds alert the soul to an awakening. This is why you should not take a shofar for granted. In the bible, we will find different explanations of shofars and their spiritual meanings. This is what we seek to explore in this article. During research, stumbled upon several amazing facts about a shofar, which can’t wait to share with you. As a Christian, pay close attention to what you are about to read. This ancient instrument called a shofar can change your perspective on spirituality.

The sound of the shofar is reminiscent of the exhortations of the prophets whose voices rang out like a shofar in denouncing their people’s wrongdoing, and in calling them to the service of God and man. Have you ever been driving along the highway when, seemingly out of nowhere, you hear the shrill sound of sirens? At first you are startled as the high-pitched sound seems to engulf you from almost every direction. Instinctively you try to locate the vehicles producing the loud, echoing sounds. At the same time, you begin to ease your car over to the side of the road, as the law requires. Finally you spot the vehicles responsible for all the ruckus and watch them as they speed to wherever the problem is located.

The sound of the siren may be annoying, but it is a necessary and effective attention-getting device. Today the wails of sirens in our cities seem much too commonplace, but when they sound, most people take them seriously and usually respond in dutiful and appropriate fashion. “For the people who are coming to these marches, don’t even know if they know (that the shofar) is a distinctly Jewish symbol or a Judaic-Christian symbol,” said Dan Hummel, research fellow in the history department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who has written on evangelical and Jewish relations. “It’s a much more militaristic sign.”

This week, the protestors blew shofars in the hopes Congress might invalidate enough votes to give President Donald Trump a second term — an unlikely outcome that would require a majority in both houses of Congress. “The Jesus movement created a new influx of messianic culture that brought with it those things that were typically Jewish in origin into the church,” said Surasky, who also leads a Messianic Jewish congregation in Columbia, Maryland. ”A lot of Christians today are attempting to put Jesus back into his Jewish context.”As appropriate to the holiday as this midrash might be, the psalm does not refer explicitly to Rosh Hashana or to any other particular occasion. Its most blatant subject matter is not divine judgment of the Jewish people—a Leitmotif of the penitential season—but the universal acclaim that is God’s due for being/becoming “king over all the earth”.

It is absolutely certain that both the spiritual leaders of Jewry and the masses of uneducated Jews (or at least the majority of these) before, during and after the talmudic period believed that the shofar, the ram’s horn, was blown on the holiday of Rosh Hashanah in order to confuse Satan and his demonic cohorts. The widely held belief was that the blowing of the shofar would stop Satan from approaching God at a crucial moment, keeping him from indicting Jews for past sins in a heavenly judicial proceeding in which God decides the future of each Jew.
