A. Definition of Adhan and Iqamah

1. Adhan

Azan in language can be interpreted as a call (an-nida') or notification (al-i'lam). However, in terms of fuqaha, what is meant by the call to prayer is:

Notification regarding the entry of fardhu prayer times, by using ma'tsurah lafazh, in a special way.

From the definitions of the language and terms above, there are two points of the call to prayer: (1) as notification of the start of the prayer time, and (2) as a call or invitation to all Muslims to pray in congregation at the mosque.

2. Iqamah

In language, iqamah is mashdar from the verb aqama which essentially means to make a person who is sitting or lying down stand up. Meanwhile, in terms, Imam Al-Buhuti explained that iqamah is:

Notification of prayer implementation with special lafazh2.

From this we can conclude that iqamah is a notification that the prayer will be carried out immediately and with iqamah it makes the person who is sitting stand up to set the row, so that not long after the iqamah is finished it is expected that the row is neatly arranged and the prayer is ready to be carried out.

B. Azan and Iqamah Shari'a

As for the matter of the law, as narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari3, Muslim4, Abu Daud5, Tirmidhi6, Ibn Majah7, and others, that the Messenger of Allah and his companions first after the migration from Mecca to Medina had a deliberation about how to inform and gather the Muslims to pray in the mosque.

Some of the friends suggested that they light a fire at every prayer time, so that those who saw it from afar could remind each other that the prayer time had come, but the Prophet did not agree.
