The object of Euchre game is to win at least three tricks. If the side that fixed the trump fails to get three tricks, it is said to be "euchred." Winning all five tricks is called a "march."

After cards dealt, the player sitting left of the dealer is the first player to decide whether or not the suit of the upcard becomes trump. The player says "pick it up" to the dealer if he thinks he and his partner can do well with that suit, or says "pass" and the decision goes on to the next player to his left. As long as the bid is passed, the next player to the left has the same options of picking up or passing. At any time a suit is declared trump, the bidding is over and the play begins.

If the first three players all pass (means that none of them want to make the suit of the upcard trump), the dealer has his turn to either to pick up the upcard himself, declaring it trump, or to turn it over and start a second round of bidding.

The trump ranking in the Euchre card game is quite different from most other trump taking games. The trump suit rank higher than the other suits, but within the trump suit the Jack is the highest card. Then, in a weird twist, the Jack in the other suit that's the same color as the trump is the next best trump card. if spades are trump then the Jack of clubs would be the next best card,
